CHAINSAW TRAINING

Also known as Chainsaw Level 1, this course set applies to individuals who are responsible for trimming and cutting felled or fallen trees with a chainsaw. 

Typically, these individuals work in arboriculture, forestry, agriculture, conservation and land management, local government, emergency services and other government agency operations. Please note, this unit does not apply to commercial harvesting operations except for minor forest produce.

This course set incorporates the content of the following units:

  • FWPCOT2254 Maintain chainsaws
  • FWPCOT2273 Trim and cut felled trees

MAINTAIN CHAINSAWS

This includes knowledge of:

  • types, purpose, features and operation of chainsaws
  • features and names of different parts of fuel powered and electrically powered chainsaws
  • purpose, features and operation of tools and equipment used in chainsaw maintenance activities
  • specifications and types of bars, chains and sprockets
  • differences between frequent and periodic chainsaw maintenance requirements
  • techniques for:
    • removing chains and other chainsaw components
    • assessing chain condition
    • sharpening chains to specified requirements
    • reassembling chainsaw components
    • assessing battery condition, if applicable
  • hazards associated with maintaining chainsaws, and methods to minimise associated risks
  • workplace procedures specific to maintaining chainsaws
  • environmental protection practices relevant to maintaining chainsaws

TRIM & CUT FELLED TREES

This includes knowledge of:

  • environmental protection measures suitable for a worksite where trimming and cutting operations are performed
  • hazard control measures suitable for a worksite where trimming and cutting operations are performed
  • tree defects and how they affect tree cutting activities
  • felled tree stresses and how they affect tree cutting activities
  • chainsaw cutting techniques and associated hazards
  • cutting patterns used to optimise time and recovery of product from felled trees
  • cutting sequences used to maintain control of cut sections and minimise cutting problems
  • purpose and procedures for routine operator maintenance of chainsaws
  • procedures used to free a pinched or stuck chainsaw
  • methods for assessing chain condition
  • workplace procedures specific to felled tree trimming and cutting activities

CHAINSAW FAMILIARISATION

Non accredited

This non accredited workshop caters for beginners or the home handy person that wants to learn safe chainsaw techniques including;

  • Safety requirements
  • Environmental impacts
  • Risk Assessment
  • PPE selection & use
  • Basic chainsaw maintenance
  • Chain sharpening
  • Practical cross cutting techniques

 

Participants are required to demonstrate all of the elements of the course. Any participant with an injury or condition which prevents them from demonstrating the tasks, may attend the training but may be issued with a non-accredited Statement of Attainment
